New Delhi. In the current Kharif season, as compared to last year, there is a decrease in the sowing area of both the major pulses - Arhar (Tuvar) and Urad, due to which there is a possibility of decrease in its production and increase in dependence on imports.

However, since the sowing season is still going on, it is difficult to make a definite estimate about the area, but there are definitely signs of decrease in the enthusiasm and attraction of farmers in its cultivation.

This time in top producing states like Karnataka and Maharashtra, instead of Tuvar, farmers are getting news of damage to the crop due to heavy rains and flood situation in important producing areas.

According to official data, the total production area of Tuvar at the all-India level has decreased from 38 lakh hectares last year to 34.90 lakh hectares this time.

Its sowing area in major producing states fell from 34.07 lakh hectares to 31.73 lakh hectares. Under this, the area of Tuvar fell from 15.42 lakh hectare to 13.01 lakh hectare (till 18th July) in Karnataka from 11.95 lakh hectare to 11.76 lakh hectare and in Gujarat from 1.96 lakh hectare to 1.55 lakh hectare, while on the other hand its area improved from 79 thousand hectare to 97 thousand hectare in Andhra Pradesh and increased from 3.95 lakh acre to 4.44 lakh acre in Telangana.

As far as Urad is concerned, its total domestic production area fell by 1.20 lakh hectare from 17.80 lakh hectare last year to 16.60 lakh hectare this time.

Under this, its sowing area fell from 50 thousand hectare to 40 thousand hectare in Gujarat and from 3.92 lakh hectare to 3.53 lakh hectare in Maharashtra.

Its area has also decreased in some other states. On the other hand, the sowing area of urad improved from 92 thousand hectares to 95 thousand hectares in Karnataka and increased from 2.94 lakh hectares to 3.11 lakh hectares in Rajasthan. Some changes are being seen in the cultivation of urad in other states.
