New Delhi. Sugarcane sowing is nearing completion, and government data indicates an increase in the cultivation area compared to last year. Reports suggest an expansion of acreage in Maharashtra and Karnataka, while a decline is noted in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the latest data from the Union Ministry of Agriculture, the total sugarcane cultivation area across the country reached 57.58 lakh hectares by July 10 of the current year. This marks an increase of 86,000 hectares (or 1.51%) over the 56.72 lakh hectares recorded by July 10 of the previous year, and exceeds the normal average area of 54.20 lakh hectares by 3.38 lakh hectares. The apex industry body—the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA)—also releases sugarcane sowing data based on satellite imagery; there is often some discrepancy between the two sets of figures.
Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka are the top three sugarcane-producing states. Additionally, large-scale production takes place in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Sugarcane cultivation is limited in Rajasthan and Odisha. The weather conditions and the monsoon during July and August will prove crucial for the crop.
