Government Wheat Procurement Rapidly Approaching Revised Target

New Delhi. The Union Ministry of Food had initially set a procurement target of 303.37 lakh tonnes of wheat for the current Rabi marketing season; however, this target was subsequently increased by 42 lakh tonnes to stand at 345.30 lakh tonnes.

Actual wheat procurement for the Central Pool has significantly surpassed the initial target and is now rapidly advancing towards the new, revised target. Government wheat procurement has already reached its highest level in the last four years.

While wheat procurement for the Central Pool has largely concluded in Punjab and Haryana, the process remains ongoing in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Collectively, these five states contribute over 95 percent of the wheat procured for the Central Pool.

An interesting fact is that, in all five of these states, government wheat procurement this year has exceeded that of the previous year, and market arrivals have also increased. Additionally, wheat has been procured in smaller quantities in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh.

It is anticipated that by June 30, 2026—when the Rabi marketing season formally concludes—the total government wheat procurement will reach the vicinity of the revised target. In Haryana, the target has already been achieved.
