News Capsule: India-US Trade Deal Nears Completion, Tariff Relief Expected for Agricultural and Industrial Products
★ Most issues related to the interim trade agreement between India and the United States have reportedly been resolved, with only formal approval remaining. To finalize the deal, senior officials from both countries are scheduled to meet in New Delhi for four days starting June 1.
★ The discussions will focus on concluding the Interim Trade Pact while also advancing negotiations toward a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). In a joint statement issued on February 7, 2026, India and the United States agreed on a framework to gradually reduce trade barriers and provide tariff concessions.
★ Under the proposed agreement, India has offered to reduce or eliminate import duties on several U.S. industrial and agricultural products. These include Distillers Dried Grains (DDGs), red sorghum used in animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine, and spirits.
★ In return, the United States has pledged to lower tariffs imposed on a range of Indian exports. According to reports, duties of up to 50% on several Indian products could be reduced to around 18%.
★ The two sides are also discussing the removal of the additional 25% tariff imposed on certain Indian products over India's purchases of Russian oil, with the remaining tariff rate potentially capped at 18%.
★ If finalized, the agreement is expected to provide a significant boost to bilateral trade. It could increase trade flows in agriculture, edible oils, animal feed ingredients, and industrial goods, while strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
★ India’s agricultural markets are closely monitoring the negotiations, particularly for their potential impact on soybean oil imports and the livestock feed sector.
