Formation of a New Depression Likely to Bring Rain to Tamil Nadu and Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: A low-pressure area forming over the southern Andaman Sea is expected to intensify into a depression soon, likely bringing heavy rainfall to Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Northeast Monsoon, which typically brings significant rainfall to South India, is currently fully active. Various parts of Tamil Nadu have already experienced heavy downpours, and the rain in these two states could prove highly beneficial for plantation crops.

According to the Meteorological Department, this new depression is expected to bring widespread rain across the southern peninsula next week. In addition to Kerala and Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may also receive heavy rainfall. This spell of rain is expected to continue from November 1 to November 4. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands will also be affected by this weather system.

Notably, this depression is expected to bring heavy rainfall to several drought-prone areas in Karnataka, which could benefit crops such as pigeon pea (tur), maize, sugarcane, and black pepper, along with other spices. Karnataka is the country’s leading producer of black pepper and coffee, and it also produces large quantities of red chili, turmeric, onions, and coconuts.

In Andhra Pradesh, there is a risk that heavy rainfall accompanied by intense storms could damage plantation and spice crops; however, the rain in Telangana is expected to be beneficial for these crops.
