New Delhi. The total foodgrain stock in the Central Pool as of October 1, 2025, was 676.43 lakh tonnes, a decrease of 25.60 lakh tonnes from the 702.03 lakh tonnes available on September 1, 2025, but an increase of 128.01 lakh tonnes from the 548.42 lakh tonnes on October 1, 2024.
Compared to September, rice stocks decreased from 369.06 lakh tonnes to 356.10 lakh tonnes at the beginning of October, and wheat stocks fell from 332.97 lakh tonnes to 320.33 lakh tonnes.
Furthermore, paddy stocks decreased by 169.02 lakh tonnes to 139.22 lakh tonnes, and coarse grain stocks fell from 4.31 lakh tonnes to 3.18 lakh tonnes.
A large stock of rice exists in the central pool, and it will continue to increase rapidly in the coming months as new Kharif rice stocks arrive and government procurement has begun.
This year, the area under paddy cultivation has increased, and the overall crop condition is satisfactory. If this large stock is not cleared quickly, it could pose significant difficulties in storing the new rice stock.
As for wheat, there is currently sufficient government stock, but the arrival of new stocks is at least six months away. Wheat sowing is about to begin soon, and harvesting for the new crop will begin in March-April.
In the meantime, domestic demand and needs will have to be met from existing stocks. Storage limits are in place for wheat, and its market price remains largely stable.
This prevents the government from needing to sell wheat from its stocks to millers and processors under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS).
