Buenos Aires. Located in Latin America, Argentina already stands as the leading exporter of soybean oil; it is now also making rapid strides in the export of sunflower oil. This is likely to pose an increasing challenge in the future to the top producing and exporting nations of the Black Sea region—namely Ukraine, Russia, and Romania.

Argentina's share in the global sunflower oil export market stood at 7 percent in 2016–17, rising to 10 percent in 2024–25. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has projected that this share will further increase to 13 percent by 2026–27.

Currently, Ukraine retains the top spot with a 33 percent market share, while Russia holds the second position with 31 percent. Argentina is rapidly advancing with the aim of challenging the dominance of these two nations.

Indeed, the focus of all three countries is centered on India, as it has emerged as the world's leading importer of sunflower oil.

Previously, the Indian market was dominated by Ukraine; however, Russia has now significantly surpassed it. Argentina, too, is striving to overtake Ukraine.
