Adelaide. India's robust imports of Indian chickpea from Australia continued in December, and data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that India remained the largest buyer of the chickpea in the October-December 2025 quarter.

According to the Bureau, Australian chickpea exports to India in October 2025 were 39,881 tonnes, which jumped to 224,422 tonnes in November and 368,177 tonnes in December 2025. Consequently, total chickpea exports for the entire quarter reached 632,480 tonnes.

Australia has once again experienced a robust chickpea production in the current 2025-26 season, resulting in a large exportable stock and competitive prices. This has maintained Indian buyers' enthusiasm for its imports. Meanwhile, India has seen a significant increase in chickpea acreage, and production is expected to improve.

According to the Bureau's report, during the October-December 2025 quarter, a total of approximately 1.06 million tonnes of chickpeas were shipped from Australia, including 98,000 tonnes in October, 37.4 million tonnes in November, and 58.8 million tonnes in December.

During this quarter, Australia exported 21.2 million tonnes to Bangladesh, 16.0 million tonnes to Pakistan, 33,000 tonnes to the United Arab Emirates, and 10,000 tonnes to Nepal, while the remaining chickpeas were shipped to other countries. Australia still has a large exportable stock of chickpeas.
