Will Almond Kernel Prices Touch 2021 Levels?

New Delhi. Informed sources suggest that, given the current situation, there is a possibility that almond kernel prices could touch 2021 levels before Diwali. It is worth noting that in August 2021, almond kernel prices hit a record high of ₹1,050 per kilogram. Currently, prices in the Delhi market are quoted at ₹980–₹990 per kilogram. Reports indicate that almond production in California this year is lower compared to last year. Notably, almond production in California has been declining for the past two years. Production stood at 2,800 million pounds in 2024 and is estimated to drop to 2,720 million pounds in 2025. Forecasts for 2026 suggest production of 2,700 million pounds. While the arrival of new almonds has begun in California, new stock is expected to reach Indian markets by September–October.
High Prices
Sources state that last year, the opening price for new California almonds was $1.80–$1.85 per pound, whereas in the current season, it is being quoted at $2.60–$2.65 per pound. High opening prices, combined with a stronger dollar, will result in higher import costs, potentially driving prices up further in the future.
Imports
According to available data, almond imports in July 2026 were lower compared to the previous year. In July 2025, 1,453 containers were imported, whereas in July 2026, the figure stood at 1,086 containers. However, there has been a marginal increase in imports compared to the 2026 figures. Imports totaled 1,079 containers in June 2026. So far this season, the highest volume of imports—1,241 containers—was recorded in March 2026.
Rise in Prices
Over the past fortnight, the price of almond kernels in the Delhi market has risen by ₹40–50 per kilogram. Notably, while almond kernels were quoted at ₹935–940 per kg at the beginning of the month, the price has now climbed to ₹980–990 per kg. Sources believe there is no likelihood of a price decline at current levels. Traders anticipate that prices will continue to rise gradually in the coming days and could set a new record ahead of Diwali.
