42% of Oil Palm Cultivation Target Achieved

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Agriculture stated that under the 'National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm,' a target was set to establish new oil palm plantations across 6.50 lakh hectares nationwide. However, between the years 2021-22 and 2025-26, new plantations could be established on only 2.73 lakh hectares, representing 42 percent of the set target. The actual area covered fell short of the target by 3.77 lakh hectares, or 58 percent.

The mission was launched in 2021-22 with the goal of establishing additional plantations covering 6.50 lakh hectares by 2025-26. A campaign for this initiative is being conducted across 15 states.

Telangana leads the effort, with oil palm plantations established on 98,112 hectares. This is followed by Andhra Pradesh (97,271 hectares), Arunachal Pradesh (20,967 hectares), and Assam (14,032 hectares).

Other states where the cultivation area remained below 10,000 hectares include Odisha, Nagaland, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Mizoram, Gujarat, Kerala, Manipur, and Goa. Special emphasis is being placed on oil palm cultivation in the southern states and the northeastern region, as the weather, soil, and climatic conditions there are favorable for the crop.

In Tripura, the mission was implemented in 2023-24, and the oil palm plantation area there has reached 6,137 hectares. Across the aforementioned 15 states, a total of 21.70 lakh hectares of suitable land has been identified for oil palm cultivation, yet plantations have been established on only 6,40,264 hectares (29 percent) so far.
