New Delhi: The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has stated that, given the increase in sowing area and favorable weather conditions for the crop, domestic wheat production in the current Rabi season of 2025-26 is expected to surpass the record level of 1179.40 lakh tonnes achieved in the 2024-25 season.
According to the Agriculture Minister, the wheat crop is currently in good condition, and overall production is expected to be better than the previous season.
Similarly, the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) said that the wheat sowing area has exceeded 330 lakh hectares, and the crop appears to be in a very strong position.
If conditions remain normal and satisfactory for the next few weeks, the total production of this important food grain could reach 1200 lakh tonnes. Wheat sowing started early this year and was completed on time.
Data from the Union Ministry of Agriculture shows that the total wheat production area in the 2024-25 Rabi season reached a new record level of 328.04 lakh hectares, while in the current Rabi season, it has further increased by 6.13 lakh hectares to an all-time high of 334.17 lakh hectares.
More than 73 percent of this area has been sown with climate-resilient and bio-fortified varieties of wheat. These varieties are more capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions.
Sowing of wheat and other Rabi crops (excluding paddy) is almost complete, and harvesting is expected to begin in earnest from March. Arrivals of early-sown crops may begin in February.
It is worth noting that India is the world's second-largest producer and consumer of wheat after China.
