News Capsule: Sugar Positive News – Export Update
★ In the 2025–26 season (October–September), India has signed deals to export around 600,000 tonnes of sugar so far, out of which nearly 400,000 tonnes have already been shipped. Exports gained momentum in March, mainly due to a weaker rupee and higher global prices.
★ If the current pace continues, India is expected to export about 1.2 million tonnes of sugar by September. The government has permitted total exports of 1.58 million tonnes for the season.
★ The war in West Asia and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have affected global supply, supporting international sugar prices. At the same time, rising crude oil prices are encouraging mills to divert sugarcane towards ethanol production, impacting sugar availability.
★ In March, the Indian rupee weakened to record lows, making Indian sugar exports more competitive in the global market.
★ However, the global outlook is not entirely supportive. The International Sugar Organization estimates a surplus of around 1.22 million tonnes in 2025–26 due to higher production in India, Thailand, and Pakistan.
★ India’s sugar production has risen by 9% year-on-year to 27.1 million tonnes by the end of March, driven by higher cane crushing and improved recovery rates.
★ A weak rupee and strong global prices are supporting Indian sugar exports, but global surplus and price volatility will play a key role in determining market direction ahead.
