Weather forecasts indicate slightly wetter conditions next week across parts of the US Southern Plains, with nearly 1 inch of precipitation expected from Central Texas through the panhandle and into parts of Nebraska.
Crop Progress data showed that 7% of the US winter wheat crop has headed, which is ahead of the 5-year average of 5%.
The first condition rating of the year placed 35% of the crop in good to excellent condition, well below analysts’ average estimate of 42%. It was also lower than last year’s starting level of 48%.
The Brugler500 index stood at 298 points, which is 30 points below last year’s start and marks the seventh lowest beginning for the crop since 1990.
The first Crop Progress report of the year showed the US spring wheat crop at 2% planted, slightly behind the normal pace.
For the week ending April 2, US wheat export shipments totaled 334,106 MT (12.27 million bushels), down 13.5% from the previous week and 0.38% lower than the same week last year.
Mexico was the largest destination with 273,703 MT, followed by Indonesia with 57,763 MT and South Korea with 55,000 MT.
Total wheat shipments for the current marketing year have reached 17.73 MMT (651.4 million bushels), which is down 16.6% year-on-year.
