West Bengal Rice Industry Urges New Government for Relief

Kolkata: The rice industry of West Bengal—the country's leading paddy and rice-producing state—has urged the new provincial government to develop and expand infrastructure provisions within the state, expedite the approval of new schemes and policies, and foster a conducive environment for export promotion. Millers and exporters emphasize that government policy support, backing, and incentives are essential for the growth of the rice industry and for attracting investment into the sector.
According to industry observers, there is a pressing need for infrastructure facilities—particularly roads, drainage systems, and warehouses—for rice mills; a significant shortage of such facilities is currently being observed, especially in rural areas.
The condition of roads and drainage systems in these regions is poor, and obtaining electricity connections is often a delayed process. Consequently, traders and millers face immense difficulties in conducting their business operations.
An analyst notes that in many rural districts, it takes several months for new rice mills to secure an electricity connection. Furthermore, project costs in these areas remain significantly high, and entrepreneurs often face exploitation and harassment.
The industry harbors high expectations that the new government will provide prompt services and adopt an effective strategy to ensure the availability of basic infrastructure facilities. West Bengal's rice industry is substantial in scale.
It is imperative to construct storage facilities equipped with modern technology and superior amenities within the state, and to take concrete steps to improve transportation infrastructure. There is an urgent need to reconstruct dilapidated and crumbling roads.
India's total annual rice production has now exceeded 150 million tonnes, while the stock of this vital food grain in the Central Pool stands at over 59 million tonnes. India continues to remain the world's leading exporter of rice.
