Turmeric Prices Fall: Export Demand Affected
New Delhi. Turmeric prices declined during the current week. Sources say that while the unrest in West Asia is impacting export demand, new arrivals at producing centers are also increasing, leading to lower futures prices, which has impacted the spot market.
Although reports indicate that turmeric production in the country during the current season will be higher than last year, prices are expected to rise in the future due to low outstanding stocks. Given the current situation, a price increase is unlikely in the near future, but the market will certainly rebound in the coming days if export demand emerges.
It is noteworthy that during the current season, turmeric was sown on a 30-35 percent larger area in producing centers, but due to adverse weather conditions, production will not increase as expected. According to information received, turmeric production in the country is estimated to be 80-85 lakh bags during the current financial year, compared to 72-75 lakh bags last year. Production in 2024 is estimated to be 50-55 lakh bags.
Arrivals
Currently, arrivals are in full swing in Nizamabad and Sangli markets. Arrivals in Nizamabad are 40-45 thousand bags and in Sangli 18-20 thousand bags. Arrivals have also begun in Erode, with 5-6 thousand bags, and in the Marathwada region. Arrival pressure on the Marathwada region is expected to build by the end of the month.
Price
During the current week, turmeric prices have declined by ₹3-5 per kg. In futures, the April price opened at ₹15,350 and closed at ₹14,680 at the end of the week. The price of May closed at Rs.14812 at the end of the week, while the price opened at Rs.15110 at the beginning of the week. In Erode market, the bale price was quoted at Rs.136, down from Rs.141. In Nizamabad market, the bale was also quoted at Rs.125 at the end of the week, down by Rs.5 per kg. Prices were also quoted at a lower level in other markets. Sources say that although a good rise in turmeric prices is being predicted during the current season, and the prices will gradually start rising after May-June. Due to the bad news from the producing centers and low local demand, the bale price in Delhi market came down to Rs.148/150, which was being quoted at Rs.160/162 in the month of January.
Exports
In the first nine months of the current financial year 2025-26, turmeric exports increased by 4 percent compared to last year, while revenue increased by 1 percent. According to data released by the Spices Board, turmeric exports in April-December 2025 amounted to 1,42,386 tons, earning ₹2,257.64 crore (approximately $1.8 billion). In April-December 2024, 1,36,921 tons were exported, earning ₹2,234.58 crore (approximately $1.8 billion). Total turmeric exports during 2024-25 amounted to 1,76,325 tons. However, sources believe that given the current situation, exports during 2025-26 will be lower than last year. During 2020-21, the record export of turmeric was 1,83,868 tons.
