News Capsule: Spice Market Gains: Turmeric, Jeera and Coriander Rise
★ On Monday, futures prices of all major spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) moved higher, driven by crop damage, lower arrivals, and weather-related concerns.
★ Turmeric prices increased following reports of crop damage in parts of Maharashtra due to unseasonal rains. Lower arrivals, along with strong domestic and export demand, also supported prices.
★ Coriander saw a strong rise as lower sowing and expectations of reduced production this season boosted sentiment. However, arrivals from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are expected to increase in the coming days, which may put pressure on prices at higher levels.
★ Jeera prices also edged higher due to concerns over adverse weather conditions in key producing regions. Arrivals in March were down about 23% year-on-year, keeping near-term supply tight. Additionally, rising temperatures in north Gujarat may impact yields of late-sown crops.
★ Spice prices are currently supported by crop damage, tight supply, and weather uncertainties. However, limited demand at higher levels may keep the market range-bound in the near term.
