The Scourge of Extreme Heat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the spell of severe heat will persist across almost all parts of the country for the next few days. This could pose significant difficulties for farmers as they prepare their fields ahead of the commencement of the Kharif crop sowing process.
In this context, the situation is feared to become particularly dire in states such as Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Due to a lack of substantial rainfall in most parts of the country since January, water levels in dams and reservoirs have dropped to alarming levels.
Now, with the intense heatwave expected to continue until the arrival of the monsoon, the situation could become even more critical. Relief from the severe heat and high temperatures is unlikely until at least May 21. However, the Meteorological Department has indicated the possibility of scattered showers accompanied by thunder and lightning—or even heavy rainfall—in parts of the southern states and the northeastern region of the country during this period. Conversely, the northwestern, central, and eastern regions of the country will be compelled to endure the twin crises of scorching heat and drought. Temperatures are expected to remain at significantly elevated levels between May 16 and May 21.
The Meteorological Department has projected that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala on May 26—news that brings a sense of relief. Last year as well, the monsoon had arrived slightly ahead of schedule, which aided farmers in several states in commencing the early cultivation of Kharif crops.
This year, however, the El Niño weather pattern is expected to remain active during the upcoming months, which could potentially result in a somewhat weaker monsoon. Indeed, substantial pre-monsoon rainfall in May typically provides significant relief to farmers; yet, this time around, many regions remain parched. There is, therefore, an urgent and critical need for heavy rainfall in these areas as soon as possible.
