Daress Salam. In the African country- Tanzania, there has been a huge increase in the production of pigeon pea (tuvar) and gram in recent years, which is giving it a good opportunity to increase its export. The export offer price of pulses in Tanzania, located in East Africa, also remains at a competitive level, due to which its demand remains strong in the global market and especially in India.
Efforts are being made to increase the production of pulses in many African countries, which include Mozambique, Malawi, Sudan, Kenya and Uganda etc.
A total of 4,47,943 tonnes of pulses were exported from Tanzania in the year 2023, which increased to 5,90,399 tonnes in the year 2024. With this, Tanzania became the most prominent country in the African continent and the eighth largest country in the world in the export of pulses. Countries like Canada, Australia, Russia, Myanmar, America, Turkey and India remained ahead of Tanzania in the export of pulses.
After Tanzania, Egypt was the second largest exporter of pulses in the African continent, from where its total shipment increased to 4,11,365 tonnes.
After this, 2,62,739 tonnes were exported from Mozambique, 1,83,569 tonnes from Ethiopia and 1,63,723 tonnes from Sudan. But the interesting fact is that in the year 2024, the value of pulses exported from Tanzania could reach only $ 376.9 million, while Egypt earned more than this, $ 491.4 million.
In this way, despite the low quantity, the export income of pulses from Egypt increased by more than $ 100 million compared to Tanzania. Egypt has remained Tanzania's strongest competitor in the export of pulses for the last two years. Production in Tanzania is increasing rapidly.
