New Delhi. Although the production area of summer or Zaid crops has increased by about 9 lakh hectares compared to last year and has reached very close to the normal average area, but the development of crops is being hindered due to extreme heat and lack of rain in many areas.

In some areas, there is an urgent need of one or two good rains. Zaid crops have been cultivated well in the western state of Gujarat, but the temperature is high there.

Data from the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that during the current year, till April 18, the total production area of Zaid crops has increased to 68.80 lakh hectares, which is 9.07 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 59.73 lakh hectares during the same period last year, but is slightly less than the normal average area of 71.34 lakh hectares.

Since the sowing process is still going on in some areas, the total area may improve and reach the normal average area.

According to official data, compared to last year, during the current year, paddy production area jumped from 27.60 lakh hectares to 31.57 lakh hectares, pulses sowing area increased from 13.44 lakh hectares to 16.56 lakh hectares,

coarse cereals area improved from 9.92 lakh hectares to 11.51 lakh hectares and oilseeds area improved from 8.77 lakh hectares to 9.16 lakh hectares.

Compared to last year, this time there has been a good increase in the sowing area of moong, urad, maize, groundnut and sesame, while the area of other crops (except paddy) is either equal to last year or slightly behind it.

Sowing of zaid crops started in February and is likely to continue more or less till mid-May. Preparation for harvesting of its early sown crop can start from next month.
