Sowing Area for Zaid Crops Reaches 58.30 Lakh Hectares

New Delhi: Data from the Union Ministry of Agriculture reveals that, at the national level, the cultivation area for summer (or Zaid) crops has improved by 1 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 58.30 lakh hectares. Last year, this figure stood at 57.80 lakh hectares.
Compared to the previous year, the cultivation area for paddy during the current year declined from 32.60 lakh hectares to 30.10 lakh hectares. However, the sowing area for pulses surged from 7.02 lakh hectares to 8.79 lakh hectares; the acreage for coarse cereals increased from 10.80 lakh hectares to 11.60 lakh hectares; and the area under oilseeds improved from 7.42 lakh hectares to 7.74 lakh hectares.
Among pulses, the acreage for Moong (Green Gram) jumped from 4.91 lakh hectares to 6.09 lakh hectares; among coarse cereals, the area under Maize improved from 7.01 lakh hectares to 7.18 lakh hectares; and among oilseed crops, the sowing area for Groundnut rose from 4.20 lakh hectares to 4.59 lakh hectares. The average area for Zaid crops has been estimated at 75.40 lakh hectares.
