New Delhi. Driven by robust mustard production and improved crushing margins, an increase in the output of mustard oil and mustard meal is anticipated during the current 2025-26 season.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects that India's mustard oil production will rise from 3.956 million tonnes in the 2024-25 season to reach 4.090 million tonnes in the 2025-26 season. There is currently an abundant supply of mustard, and crushing operations are proceeding vigorously.
According to the USDA report, during the 2025-26 season, the total availability of mustard oil in India is expected to reach 4.487 million tonnes, comprising a carry-over stock of 0.357 million tonnes from the previous season, a projected production of 4.090 million tonnes, and potential imports of 40,000 tonnes.
Of this total, domestic consumption is estimated at 4.080 million tonnes, while exports are projected at 10,000 tonnes; consequently, a surplus stock of 0.397 million tonnes of mustard oil is expected to remain at the end of the marketing season.
Similarly, regarding mustard meal, the USDA states that domestic production could reach 6.399 million tonnes.
Combined with a carry-over stock of 0.204 million tonnes from the previous season and potential imports of 2,000 tonnes, the total availability of mustard meal is expected to reach 6.605 million tonnes.
Of this quantity, domestic consumption of mustard meal is projected at 4.7 million tonnes, with exports estimated at 1.7 million tonnes; this would leave a surplus stock of 0.205 million tonnes at the conclusion of the marketing season.
