Small Cardamom Market Update
★ Arrivals of the new crop have started in the wholesale markets, but significant arrival pressure is expected only after 15 August.
★ Due to inadequate rainfall in July, the first picking has suffered an estimated 25–30% crop loss.
★ Rainfall has now resumed, which is beneficial for the upcoming pickings, provided the crop continues to receive timely rains in the coming weeks.
★ Water scarcity during early July pushed prices up by around ₹100–150 per kg. However, higher prices reduced export demand, and with the return of rains, prices have declined by ₹25–50 per kg during the current week.
★ The market is expected to remain firm for now. Prices may soften slightly after 15 August, but a major decline is unlikely.
★ Future price movements will largely depend on rainfall conditions in the coming weeks.
★ Since the Guatemalan crop is expected to arrive only in November, a significant price correction is not anticipated before then. Lower domestic production this season has boosted exports of Indian cardamom.
★ At the auction centres, the average price is ₹3,121.32 per kg, while the highest price has reached ₹5,000 per kg.
★ At the Specialist Indian Food Park Export Pvt. Ltd. auction, 68,424 kg of cardamom arrived, and 61,009 kg was traded.
