News Capsule: Green Cardamom Prices Surge on Tight Supplies; Market Focus Shifts to New Crop and Rainfall
★ The green cardamom market witnessed a sharp rally during July 2026. Tender prices climbed from ₹3,515 per kg on July 1 to a record ₹5,000 per kg on July 27. Some profit-booking pulled prices down to ₹4,444 per kg by July 30, but the overall market sentiment remained firm.
★ The arrival of the new crop has begun, but supplies are still insufficient to put pressure on prices. Trade sources expect arrivals to increase after August 15, which will provide a clearer picture of market direction.
★ Due to inadequate rainfall during the early growing season, the first picking was 25–30% lower than normal. The resulting tight supplies pushed prices higher by around ₹100–150 per kg during July. However, the improved rainfall received during July is expected to benefit the second picking, which could partially improve production.
★ Exports have shown strong growth. During April 2025–March 2026, India's green cardamom exports increased to 16,399 tonnes, compared with 7,674 tonnes in the previous year. During April–May 2026, exports stood at 2,341 tonnes, up from 1,644 tonnes in the corresponding period last year. However, the recent sharp rise in prices could slow export demand during June and July.
★ Market participants believe that the near-term trend in green cardamom will largely depend on rainfall and the pace of new crop arrivals. In the global market, Guatemala's new crop, expected from November onwards, could improve supplies and influence international as well as Indian prices. Until then, limited availability is likely to keep the market well supported.
