News Capsule: Paddy Sowing Down by 690,000 Hectares; Weak Monsoon and El Niño Raise Concerns Over Production
★ As of July 31, 2026, India's kharif paddy sowing stood at 30.149 million hectares, compared with 30.839 million hectares during the same period last year, reflecting a decline of 690,000 hectares. Below-normal rainfall, a weak monsoon, and rising El Niño concerns have affected sowing across several major rice-growing states.
★ Although rainfall improved in some regions during the last week of July, delayed monsoon rains in many key paddy-producing states prevented timely sowing. The sowing window is now gradually closing, leaving little scope for any significant recovery in acreage.
★ The market is now closely watching rainfall during August and the progress of the standing crop. If rainfall remains below normal and El Niño conditions intensify in the coming weeks, crop productivity could be adversely affected.
★ Despite the government holding ample rice stocks and there being no immediate concern over domestic availability, this has not weighed on open market prices. Instead, paddy and rice prices have continued to strengthen amid concerns over below-normal rainfall, El Niño risks, and the possibility of lower production.
