Signs of Rising Demand, Consumption, and Prices for Mustard Oil

New Delhi. Due to certain specific factors, the prices of palm oil and soybean oil in the international market have risen and firmed up; the impact of this trend is now being observed in the Indian market as well. Indian consumers have begun prioritizing the use of indigenous edible oils—particularly mustard oil—over expensive imported alternatives. Consequently, there are clear indications of a surge in the demand, consumption, and price of mustard oil.
This evolving scenario holds significant importance. Perhaps for the first time, the price of mustard oil has become truly competitive against edible oils imported from abroad. Palm oil prices are rising rapidly, and the import of soybean oil is also proving to be expensive—partly due to the complex supply situation in the global market, and partly due to the substantial depreciation of the Rupee against the US Dollar. As a result, consumer preference for domestically produced oils has increased. This trend is expected to persist in the near future.
The Executive Director of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA)—a leading organization representing the indigenous vegetable oil industry and trade sector—notes that the use of edible oils for biodiesel production is increasing across various producing nations. Additionally, prices for soybean and sunflower oils have risen due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia. According to rough estimates, domestic sales of mustard oil during the two-month period of March-April 2026 witnessed an increase of approximately 25 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
This season saw a bumper harvest of mustard, ensuring an adequate and steady supply to crushing and processing units. Since wholesale market prices for mustard are currently trading above the Minimum Support Price (MSP), farmers are showing keen interest in selling their stocks. Furthermore, driven by the sustained high demand and favorable pricing for mustard oil, millers and processors are not hesitating to undertake bulk purchases of mustard seeds.
The growing inclination of Indian consumers toward domestic edible oils marks a significant development; it is likely to provide a strong incentive for farmers—particularly those cultivating mustard—to boost their production levels. A similar upward trend and price firmness are also being observed in the markets for soybean oil, groundnut oil, and cottonseed oil.
