Sharp rise in maize sowing across India, Karnataka and Maharashtra lead
★ Maize sowing in India has seen significant progress this year. According to data received from the Ministry of Agriculture and various state agriculture departments, as of July 18, 2025, maize has been sown on a total area of 71.21 lakh hectares across the country. This is substantially higher than last year’s figure of 61.73 lakh hectares for the same period — an increase of 9.48 lakh hectares.

State-wise status (with dates):
★ Karnataka (July 11, 2025): The highest sowing was recorded here at 14.93 lakh hectares, which is 1.93 lakh hectares more than the previous year.
★ Maharashtra (July 16, 2025): Maize was sown on 12.35 lakh hectares, up by 2.60 lakh hectares compared to 9.75 lakh hectares in 2024.
★ Telangana (July 16, 2025): Sowing covered 4.49 lakh hectares, an increase of 1.60 lakh hectares from last year.
★ Rajasthan (July 21, 2025): Maize area reached 9.34 lakh hectares, showing a marginal rise of 0.33 lakh hectares.
★ Gujarat (July 21, 2025): Sowing declined to 2.19 lakh hectares, down by 0.55 lakh hectares from last year’s 2.74 lakh hectares.
★ Andhra Pradesh (July 16, 2025): The sown area stood at 0.48 lakh hectares, 0.02 lakh hectares less than last year.
★ In total, these six major states reported maize sowing on 43.78 lakh hectares — 5.89 lakh hectares more than in 2024.
★ Experts attribute this growth in maize cultivation to better monsoon conditions this year, government support schemes, and rising demand from the ethanol and animal feed industries.
