Kochi. The festival of Onam is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the southern Indian state of Kerala, and the demand for and consumption of coconut oil—a staple cooking medium—surge during this period. To make coconut oil available to the general public at relatively lower rates, the Civil Supplies Corporation, an agency under the Kerala government, has decided to offer a price reduction.
The Corporation has revised the price of coconut oil from ₹249 per liter to ₹229 per liter. This price will be applicable across all Corporation outlets, providing some relief to the common people.
The government has officially announced this decision, and the new pricing applies to both subsidized and non-subsidized categories of coconut oil. The Corporation sells its coconut oil under the 'Sabari' brand name. The price of a half-liter (500 ml) pack of subsidized Sabari coconut oil has been reduced from ₹140 to ₹110; however, beneficiaries must present a valid ration card to purchase it.
The Cochin Oil Merchants Association (COMA) states that this price reduction is unlikely to significantly impact open-market rates for coconut oil. The government typically lowers prices during Onam each year. Currently, the retail price of coconut oil in Kerala hovers around ₹300 per liter.
