Moong Arrivals Rise in Karnataka Driven by Strong Market Prices

Gadag: Moong production in Karnataka is expected to decline due to reduced sowing acreage and unfavorable weather conditions, creating a trend of rising prices. Prices for hand-harvested Moong have climbed to the range of ₹8,600–₹10,300 per quintal, whereas machine-harvested crops command lower prices due to higher levels of impurities.
Harvesting of the new Moong crop has commenced in Karnataka, and market arrivals have begun in centers like Gadag and Bagalkot. The state saw a reduction in Moong cultivation area due to a delayed monsoon and deficient rainfall.
On August 18, Gadag—a major market in North Karnataka—recorded arrivals of approximately 12,000 quintals of Moong, leading to a slight softening in prices. Current arrivals are exceeding expectations, despite the anticipated drop in overall production. High moisture content—ranging from 18% to 21%—is being observed in the new crop, far exceeding the government-approved limit of 12%. Consequently, traders and pulse millers are showing limited interest in purchasing the stock. Meanwhile, prices for summer (Zaid) Moong in states like Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are ruling lower.
Machine-harvested Moong is currently being quoted in the range of ₹7,000–₹8,500 per quintal. Arrivals are expected to increase steadily in the coming period, with price fluctuations likely depending on the quality of the produce.
