Rainfall continues across several states as monsoon activity intensifies

New Delhi. The Southwest Monsoon is currently fully active across the western, central, northern, and northwestern parts of the country, covering states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. These regions have been experiencing torrential rainfall over the past few days, a trend likely to persist in the coming days.

While the sowing of Kharif crops was sluggish across various states due to a very weak monsoon in June, rainfall conditions began to improve at the start of July. This has narrowed the rainfall deficit and accelerated the pace of Kharif crop sowing.

Although the total area under cultivation still lags significantly behind last year's figures, recent rains offer hope that the situation will become largely satisfactory.

The Central Government is monitoring the situation closely, and the Meteorological Department is regularly issuing monsoon updates. Special emphasis is being placed on expanding the cultivation area for pulses and oilseeds.

Cotton sowing is significantly delayed, and there are indications of a reduction in the area under maize cultivation. In Rajasthan, the area sown with pearl millet (bajra) has decreased substantially. Adequate rainfall could facilitate an improvement in the sowing of various crops.
