New Delhi. According to the latest data of the Union Agriculture Ministry, in the current Kharif season, till 22nd August, the total production area under pulses has improved to 112.77 lakh hectares which is 1.35 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 111.42 lakh hectares during the same period last year.

The special thing is that except for Arhar (Tuvar), there has been a slight increase in the area under all other major pulses crops - moong, urad, moth and kulathi etc.

Area under Tuvar has also reached very close to last year. According to the available data, during the current Kharif season, the production area of pigeon pea (tuvar) at the national level decreased from 44.77 lakh hectares to 43.98 lakh hectares as compared to last year.

However, the sowing area of moong improved from 33.50 lakh hectares to 33.95 lakh hectares and the area of black gram increased from 20.31 lakh hectares to 21.71 lakh hectares.

Similarly, the production area of moth improved from 9.11 lakh hectares to 9.17 lakh hectares, that of horse gram improved from 23 thousand hectares to 26 thousand hectares and the sowing area of other pulses increased from 3.50 lakh hectares to 3.70 lakh hectares.

But the production area of all pulses is still behind the five-year average area, while the sowing process has ended in most of the areas.

Apart from this, there are reports of damage to pulse crops due to heavy monsoon rains and waterlogging in fields in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
