New Delhi. In order to ensure adequate supply and availability in the open market during the current festive season and to control the possible rise in prices, the Central Government has reduced the level of storage limit of wheat. This new order will remain effective till 31 March 2026.

Under the new instructions, the quantity of wheat for wholesalers and stockists has been reduced from 3000 tonnes to a maximum of 2000 tonnes, for retailers from 10 tonnes to 8 tonnes, for big chain retailers a maximum stock of 8 tonnes of wheat has been fixed at each outlet. The total stock limit will be determined according to the number of all outlets of big chain retailers.

Similarly, wheat millers / processors were earlier allowed to keep stock equivalent to 70 percent of the monthly installed capacity, but now its level has been reduced to 60 percent.

The government notification said that it will be mandatory for all wheat storage units/firms to upload the latest details of their stock on the wheat stock portal every Friday and if any unit has wheat stock in excess of the prescribed limit, it will have to bring the stock within the prescribed limit within 15 days of the notification.

Although the government has a good surplus stock of wheat to sell under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) and the price of this important food grain in the domestic wholesale markets has also remained stable within a certain range with limited fluctuations,

but the government fears that the price of wheat may rise during the peak festive season. In view of this, it is already taking precautionary steps. After the festive season is over, the off or lean season of wheat supply will begin.
