Pea prices in Canada remain stable amid limited trading

Saskatoon. Following assurances of tariff reductions in China, the Canadian pea market experienced some activity in the third and fourth weeks of January, and prices even rose slightly. However, due to limited trading, pea prices have remained relatively stable for the past two weeks. The decision to reduce customs duties on Canadian pea imports into China is scheduled to take effect next month (March).

Yellow peas are trading at $8.00-8.30 per bushel in Western Canadian markets, and green peas with a maximum of 3% husk are trading at $10.50 per bushel (FOB delivery). Prices for those with more husk are trading below this level. Maple peas are trading at $11-13 per bushel, depending on location, variety, and delivery time.

Pea prices in Canada typically remain high and firm after January, encouraging farmers to sow them. This time, prices have strengthened slightly, but this isn't due to increased demand, but rather a positive psychological impact of the opening of the Chinese market. Pea sowing will begin in April, while farmers already have a large stock. The next crop will arrive in August-September, and final contracts for buying and selling are about to begin.
