New Delhi. The Central Government recently announced permission for the commercial export of 2.5 million tons of wheat, and now, on February 24th, the Ministry of Commerce has issued a formal notification to this effect.
The notification, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), states that while the wheat export policy remains restricted, the export of 2.5 million tons of wheat has been approved. Detailed export procedures will be provided in a separate notification.
A separate notification issued by the DGFT states that the export of wheat and other related products will remain restricted, but the government's announced quota for the shipment of an additional 500,000 tons of wheat products is permitted.
The government has previously announced an export quota for 500,000 tons of wheat products, which has been approved. With this new quota, exporters have received statutory approval to export a total of 1 million tons.
In addition, wheat exports from India have been approved upon specific requests to needy countries, separate from this 2.5 million tonnes of commercial exports. Needy countries can request permission from the Indian government to export wheat to ensure their domestic food security.
