New Poppy Arrivals Begin: Prices Fall
25-Feb-2026 06:39 PM
New Delhi. Poppy prices have fallen by ₹35-₹40 per kg during the current week, and market sentiment remains bearish. Experts say that in the major producing states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the government has granted opium cultivation leases at the same rate as last year, leading to reports of satisfactory production. However, recent rains were predicting a 5-₹10 percent crop loss, which occurs annually. Overall, poppy production is expected to be good this year. Furthermore, with favorable weather conditions, the crop is expected to be of good quality.
Currently, the arrival of new goods has begun in the Neemuch market, and the price of new poppy has been quoted at ₹1110 per kg. Sources say that the pressure of arrivals will begin to build after the festival of Holi, which is why the market will remain sluggish. Currently, the price of poppy tinopal in Neemuch market is quoting at ₹1400/₹1410, down from ₹1440/₹1450 at the beginning of this month. Due to weak demand and increased selling, poppy prices are being quoted at consumption centers. Sources believe that if supply pressure builds, poppy prices may fall by ₹50/₹70 per kg.
Production Estimates
Due to the crop's good condition so far, it is expected that poppy production in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will be around 9,000 tons during the current season. Production in 2025 is expected to be 8,000/₹850,000 tons. Production in 2024 was estimated to be 7,500/₹850,000 tons and in 2023, it was estimated to be 6,000/₹650,000 tons.
Import
Although poppy has not been officially imported for the past three years, imports are still consistent. This is why prices are not rising significantly.
Price
Sources say that a price increase is unlikely in March and April due to the pressure of new arrivals in the markets. However, with the onset of the summer season, prices will undoubtedly improve in May, as poppy seeds are mostly used in the preparation of Thandai.
