News Capsule: Red Chilli Prices Hit Record Highs as Tight Supplies Keep Market Firm
★ The Indian red chilli market remained exceptionally strong throughout July 2026. Prices of the benchmark Teja variety at Guntur increased from ₹21,500 per quintal on July 1 to a record ₹23,200 per quintal by July 31. In Warangal, Teja chilli was trading at around ₹22,750 per quintal, reflecting continued strength in the market.
★ Recently, China rejected some Indian red chilli consignments after claiming higher-than-permitted residues of the pesticide methamidophos and temporarily suspended imports from three Indian exporters. Although China is India's largest buyer of red chillies, importing around 150,000–190,000 tonnes annually, the development has had little impact on domestic prices so far.
★ The key reason is the tight domestic supply situation. Last season's lower production has reduced market availability, while domestic demand remains strong, keeping prices at record levels. Export data, however, has weakened. Red chilli exports declined to 34,263 tonnes in May 2026 from 50,008 tonnes in May 2025. During the January–May 2026 period, exports stood at 201,430 tonnes, compared with 384,517 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2025.
★ Market participants believe the progress of the current monsoon will be crucial for the next crop. If rainfall remains uneven and production is affected, supply concerns could intensify further.
★ In the short term, prices may witness some profit-booking after the recent rally. However, in the longer term, tight supplies, weather-related risks, and strong domestic demand are expected to keep market sentiment bullish, with red chilli prices having the potential to reach fresh record highs.
