News Capsule: Peas and Lentils Lead Harvest in Saskatchewan
★ Harvesting of all crops in Saskatchewan, Canada, remains well behind recent averages. However, higher daytime temperatures and cooler evenings last week allowed farmers to make good progress with harvesting.
★ By the beginning of the week, 11% of the province’s total crop had been harvested, compared with the five-year average of 25% at this time of August.
★ Pulse crops are leading the harvest, with 48% of the lentil crop and 44% of the pea crop now harvested and in the bin.
★ According to the Saskatchewan Agriculture Department, crops are beginning to mature rapidly, and harvesting of later-seeded crops is expected to begin soon. Many parts of the province remained relatively dry last week, which helped accelerate crop maturity and harvesting activities.
★ Market signal: Saskatchewan’s overall harvest is still well behind the five-year average. However, the relatively faster progress in lentil and pea harvesting could lead to increased arrivals of new-crop supplies in the coming days.
