News Capsule: India’s Maize Exports Resume
★ India’s maize exports are gaining momentum again in the current fiscal year, supported by higher domestic output and improved price parity in the global market.
★ During April–October 2025, maize exports rose 20% in volume to over 2.84 lakh tonnes, while export value increased 28% year-on-year.
★ According to IGrain India, exports are moving as prices have turned favourable, though trade remains cautious due to the situation in key markets such as Bangladesh.
★ Last year, exports fell to a five-year low amid strong domestic demand from poultry feed, ethanol and starch industries, along with higher local prices. This year, record production has pushed mandi prices below the MSP, making exports viable again.
★ Large harvests in the US, Ukraine and Brazil have boosted global supplies, leading to a more balanced maize market. However, domestic requirements in India are expected to remain a priority.
