News Capsule: Canada Pulses Market: Lentils, Peas and Chickpeas Remain Steady
★ The Canadian pulses market remained largely unchanged this week, with lentils, peas and chickpeas trading in a narrow range. Harvest is underway across many growing regions, and buyers are waiting for clearer information on crop yields and quality before increasing purchases.
★ In the lentil market, #2 large green lentils are trading at 22–23 cents/lb (picked up on farm), #1 small green lentils at 17–18 cents/lb, and #2 red lentils at 21–22 cents/lb. Buyer space for old-crop deliveries in August is filling quickly, with some delivery windows now shifting into late August and September.
★ Pea markets remain quiet, with yellow peas quoted around US$8.00/bushel delivered and US$7.00–7.50/bushel picked up on farm. New-crop yellow peas are being offered at around US$9.00/bushel delivered for a maximum 3% bleach specification. Demand for green and maple peas also remains subdued.
★ Chickpea prices showed little change during the week. Favourable crop conditions in Canada and the United States are supporting expectations of adequate global supplies. Steady buying from India continues to provide some support, but not enough to lift prices. In Canada, #2 large Kabuli chickpeas are trading near 26 cents/lb FOB farm, while feed-grade chickpeas are valued at around 10 cents/lb. Demand remains stronger for larger-sized Kabuli chickpeas, while smaller-sized product continues to face weak buying. Unless adverse weather affects production or export demand improves, chickpea prices are expected to remain near current levels.
