News Capsule: Bombay High Court Upholds Sugar Export Ban
★ The Bombay High Court has upheld the government's decision to ban exports of raw, white and refined sugar until September 30, 2026, ruling that the move was a well-considered policy decision taken in the interest of the domestic sugar market and not a knee-jerk reaction.
★ The court observed that protecting the interests of domestic sugar producers and consumers takes precedence over the commercial interests of exporters. It also stated that exporters may sell their sugar in the domestic market in accordance with the applicable laws and Sugar Control Orders.
★ The ban does not apply to sugar exports to the European Union and the United States under commercial export licence and tariff rate quota (TRQ) concessions. Shipments that had already met the prescribed loading and documentation conditions before the notification was issued are also exempt from the restriction.
