News Capsule: Bullish Factors Strengthen Chickpea Market Outlook as Global Prices Risex
★ International desi chickpea prices have continued to strengthen over the past two weeks, with Australian export offers increasing by US$25–30 per tonne across key destinations. If this trend continues, India's import cost is expected to rise, providing additional support to domestic chickpea prices.
★ Australia's desi chickpea production is expected to decline sharply to around 1.4 million tonnes this year, compared with over 2.4 million tonnes last season. The lower production is primarily attributed to reduced sowing, as Australian farmers shifted away from chickpeas after receiving disappointing prices in the previous season.
★ Meanwhile, arrivals of desi chickpea in Indian mandis are gradually declining. The government is closely monitoring the evolving El Niño situation and the progress of the kharif pulse crop before deciding on any policy measures such as import duty changes, stock limits, or other interventions.
★ At the same time, India's festive season is about to begin, which is expected to boost demand from besan mills, sweet manufacturers, namkeen producers, and snack manufacturers, leading to higher chickpea consumption.
★ Considering the rise in international prices, the expected decline in Australian production, lower domestic arrivals, upcoming festive demand, and the government's wait-and-watch approach, market sentiment remains bullish. Unless significant policy intervention takes place, chickpea prices are likely to remain firm and may witness further gains in the coming months.
