Likely Rise in Canadian Yellow Pea Imports to India

Mumbai: A leading Canadian trade analyst has stated that yellow pea prices in India have surged over the past two weeks (in August 2026), reaching their highest level since June 2024. Pea shipments from the Black Sea region are being disrupted, while stocks in other countries remain limited. Pea production across major producing nations—including Canada—is projected to decline by approximately 1.5 million tonnes this year.

In Canada, the average pea yield is expected to drop to 36.7 bushels per acre this year. The area sown with yellow peas has decreased by 16%; combined with lower yields, total production is estimated to fall by 27% year-on-year to 2.31 million tonnes. Green pea production is also likely to decline by 22%, settling at around 0.45 million tonnes.

Demand for Canadian peas remains strong in China, while imports of yellow peas into India are expected to accelerate in the near future, as Indian importers are receiving little support for supplies from Russia and Ukraine. Consequently, while Canadian pea prices are expected to firm up slightly, a sharp surge seems unlikely.
