Kharif Crop Sowing in Telangana Ahead of Last Year

Hyderabad: Telangana, a major producer of crops such as paddy, cotton, and maize, is currently among the few states in the country where Kharif crop sowing is progressing ahead of last year's pace. By July 8, 2026, the total area under Kharif crops in the state had risen to 55.32 lakh acres, an increase of 3.28 lakh acres compared to the 52.04 lakh acres sown during the same period last year. Sowing operations for various crops are currently ongoing in the state.

Latest data from the State Agriculture Department reveals that compared to the previous year, the area under paddy cultivation in Telangana during the current Kharif season increased from 3.64 lakh acres to 4.22 lakh acres.

However, the acreage for maize declined from 4.97 lakh acres to 2.84 lakh acres, and the sowing area for sorghum (jowar) dropped from 27,000 acres to 15,000 acres.

During the same period, the area under pulse crops improved from 3.52 lakh acres to 3.67 lakh acres. Within this category, the sowing area for Tur (pigeon pea) rose from 3.11 lakh acres to 3.19 lakh acres, the area for Moong (green gram) increased from 31,000 acres to 36,000 acres, and the acreage for Urad (black gram) grew from 9,000 acres to 11,000 acres.

Among oilseeds, the area under soybean cultivation expanded from 2.75 lakh acres to 3.35 lakh acres, while the cotton acreage surged from 34.59 lakh acres to 39.44 lakh acres.
