Harvesting Preparations Underway for Various Crops in Saskatchewan

Saskatoon. Preparations for harvesting various crops have begun in Saskatchewan, Canada's leading agricultural province. While the process is currently in its initial stages, the pace is expected to pick up soon. Hot and dry weather conditions in parts of the province have raised concerns about potential damage, particularly to late-sown crops.

Data from the provincial agriculture department indicates that by August 10, 2026, 18 percent of the winter wheat crop and 27 percent of the fall rye crop in Saskatchewan had been harvested. Additionally, harvesting was completed on 2 percent of the lentil acreage and 5 percent of the pea acreage. Harvesting also took place for other crops, covering 4 percent of barley, 1 percent of winter wheat, and 2 percent of oats.

The hot and dry weather is causing early-sown crops to mature rapidly, raising concerns that yield rates could be adversely affected. Pest and disease infestations have also been observed in some areas. Rising temperatures are leading to a depletion of soil moisture in the fields.

Lentil and pea production in Saskatchewan is likely to decline this season due to a reduction in sown acreage and weather conditions that were not entirely favorable for the crops.
