New Delhi. Thanks to massive procurement of paddy during the Kharif season and wheat during the Rabi season, alongside high carry-over stocks, a vast reserve of food grains is currently available in the Central Pool. This ensures there will be no difficulty in maintaining food security; furthermore, should the need arise, the government will be well-positioned to intervene effectively in the domestic market to boost supply and availability, as well as to curb any potential spike in prices.
According to official data, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) held a food grain stock of 907.32 lakh tonnes as of August 1, 2026. While this was 18.53 lakh tonnes lower than the 925.85 lakh tonnes available on July 1, 2026, it was approximately 1.81 lakh tonnes higher than the 726.33 lakh tonnes held on August 1, 2025. Prior to this, on August 1, 2024, the Central Pool held a stock of only 595.62 lakh tonnes.
Compared to August 1, 2025, wheat stocks in the Central Pool surged from 346.61 lakh tonnes to 505.31 lakh tonnes by August 1, 2026, while rice stocks rose from 379.72 lakh tonnes to 402.01 lakh tonnes. However, compared to July, rice stocks dipped from 403.11 lakh tonnes to 402.01 lakh tonnes, and wheat stocks fell from 522.74 lakh tonnes to 505.31 lakh tonnes during August. The procurement season for Rabi-season paddy is still ongoing, and the FCI is receiving regular supplies of custom-milled rice from rice millers.
Additionally, as of August 1, 2026, the FCI held stocks of 353.47 lakh tonnes of paddy and 9.58 lakh tonnes of coarse grains.
