Fennel Production Affected by Decrease in Sowing Area
05-Mar-2026 07:52 PM
New Delhi. There are reports of a decline in fennel production this year due to a 16 percent decrease in fennel sowing in Gujarat, a major producer state. It is noteworthy that fennel is produced in good quantities in Rajasthan, in addition to Gujarat. It is also grown in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Sowing Estimates
According to estimates released by FISS at the 10th Spice Meet Seminar recently held in Ahmedabad, fennel has been sown on 85,960 hectares in the country this year, compared to 92,200 hectares last year. In Gujarat, a major producer state, fennel has been sown on 38.09 thousand hectares this year, compared to 45.28 thousand hectares last year. However, in Rajasthan, sowing has increased by one percent compared to last year, reaching 38.77 thousand hectares. The sown area in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh was 910,000 hectares, compared to 870,000 last year.
Production
During the current season, fennel production in the country is estimated at 1,797,614 bags (each bag weighing 55 kg), compared to 1,868,393 bags last year. This year, production in Gujarat is estimated at 7,88,901 bags (935,298 bags last year). Rajasthan is estimated to produce 8,28,389 bags (7,867,777 bags last year), and Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are estimated to produce 1,83,324 bags (1,46,318 bags last year).
Arrival
Currently, the daily arrival of new fennel in Unjha, Gujarat's main market, is 6,000-7,000 bags, and the price is quoting at ₹75-95, depending on the quality. There are reports that arrivals in Rajasthan's markets will begin by the middle of this month.
Slowdown-Rise
Sources say that fennel prices are unlikely to rise in the near future. This means that in the coming days, markets in producing centers will be pressured by new arrivals. Furthermore, there are sufficient outstanding stocks, which will cause the market to remain subdued. In addition to local demand, export trade is also declining, leading to a decline in export prices to ₹94/95 per kg, down from ₹102/103 in the past.
Export
Fennel exports have been severely impacted in the first nine months of the current 2025-26 season, with a 61 percent decline, and a 49 percent decline today. According to data released by the Spices Board, 26,251 tons of fennel were exported during April-December 2025. And the export revenue was ₹330.18 crore, while in April-December 2024, exports were 67,153 tonnes and the revenue earned was ₹647 crore.
