Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to sell sugar to over 40 lakh people in Lucknow at a rate of ₹50–52 per kilogram. Sales will be conducted from the premises of the Sugarcane Farmers' Institute. According to the Cane Development Department, sugar will be made available to the general public at the institute's premises at a standard rate of ₹52 per kg, providing significant relief to the people.

In August, ex-factory, spot (wholesale), and retail market prices of sugar had surged to record highs, causing considerable hardship for the public. While ex-factory and wholesale prices have since dropped significantly, retail prices remain above ₹60 per kg.

According to a government release, the Sugar Industry and Cane Development Department has arranged to sell sugar to the public at subsidized rates. It is noteworthy that Uttar Pradesh is the country's leading producer of sugarcane and jaggery, and ranks second in sugar production.

The price for a 1 kg pack of sugar has been fixed at ₹52, and a 2 kg pack at ₹102, while a 5 kg pack will cost ₹250 and a 50 kg pack ₹2,500. Sugarcane crushing operations in the state's sugar mills are expected to begin next month. On September 3, the average retail price of sugar in the state was recorded at ₹60.69 per kg.
