The export price of chana (chickpeas) in bulk form from Australia has reached AUS $930 per tonne at Brisbane port. This price is the current rate for bulk exports, which is typically lower than container exports by about $30-$40 per tonne. (all in AUS $)
However, the price gap between bulk and containerized exports has almost disappeared, as most importers now prefer bulk shipments.
Last month, the export price of chana in bulk form peaked at $950 per tonne, marking an increase from the previous month’s $850 per tonne.
Despite an expected increase in chana production—estimated by Australia's ABARES to rise by about 14 lakh tons to a total of 18.87 lakh tons—prices have continued to climb.
Analysts expected that the high production levels would put downward pressure on prices, but instead, prices have risen rapidly.
This increase is attributed to strong demand in key markets, although it is feared that India, facing stabilizing domestic prices, may reduce imports.
Additionally, importers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, struggling with foreign currency shortages, may find it challenging to afford Australian chana at these high prices.
Moreover, India's import of yellow peas from Canada and Russia is increasing, with recent shipments arriving in large quantities, further complicating the outlook for gram imports from Australia.
