Crisis in West Asia Impacts Rice Exports

Hyderabad. The ongoing tension between Iran and the United States has disrupted the movement of cargo vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, partially affecting Indian rice exports. India exports a significant volume of Basmati rice to countries in West Asia, the Middle East, and the Gulf region; however, conditions in these areas have remained unstable for the past few months. Furthermore, the intense conflict involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels in Yemen has further exacerbated the situation.

According to official data, despite these adverse conditions, export earnings from Indian rice have not declined, though they have also failed to show any significant growth. During the first half of the current financial year—from April to September 2026—India exported rice valued at $5.77 billion, an increase of 2.5 percent compared to the same period in 2025. The persistent crisis in West Asia has also led to an increase in maritime transport costs.

It is noteworthy that India exports both Basmati and non-Basmati rice to approximately 140 countries worldwide. Shipments of non-Basmati rice include 'A' grade (fine) varieties, common (coarse) varieties, and broken rice. India supplies rice to destinations across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
