Chana Prices Expected to Remain Firm Due to Festive Demand and Low Supply

Mumbai: According to the India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), a leading trade body, domestic market prices for *chana* (gram) are likely to remain firm in the near future, whereas *tur* (pigeon pea) prices may remain stable or soften, and *urad* (black gram) prices could weaken slightly.
The association's weekly report indicates that *chana* supplies in key wholesale markets across major producing states are dwindling, while pulse millers and *besan* (gram flour) manufacturers are showing keen interest in purchasing the commodity. The festive season is set to officially begin next month, driving expectations of robust demand for *besan*.
On the other hand, *urad* prices are likely to soften slightly due to weak demand, an increase in the sowing area, and the psychological impact of regular imports. As for *tur*, although the sowing area is significantly lagging behind last year's figures, demand remains weak, and imports from abroad are continuing.
Supply constraints for *chana*—the most prominent pulse of the *rabi* season—are intensifying; meanwhile, stockists are releasing only limited quantities into wholesale markets, anticipating higher prices in the near future. Pulse and *besan* millers, snack manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers are attempting to build up stocks to meet the anticipated demand of the upcoming festive season, which kicks off in mid-August.
*Chana* prices are witnessing a gradual upward trend. Stocks held by government agencies are entering the market, and supplies of imported *chana* from Australia and Africa are currently available at Indian ports.
