Thiruvananthapuram: The Southwest Monsoon reached Delhi today, July 2, after a delay of five days; its usual arrival date in the capital is June 27. According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon has now reached most parts of Gujarat, the remaining areas of Uttar Pradesh, the majority of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab.

It has also made its entry into parts of Rajasthan. Its northern limit currently passes through Porbandar and Vallabh Vidyanagar in Gujarat, Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, Tonk in Rajasthan, Bhiwani in Haryana, and Bathinda in Punjab. Conditions remain favorable for the monsoon to advance further across these states.

According to the Meteorological Department, extremely heavy rainfall is expected at scattered locations in the northwestern region of the country—the final leg of the monsoon's journey in India—over the next two to three days.

This is likely to accelerate the pace of Kharif crop sowing. Heavy rainfall is already occurring in several areas of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. A cyclonic circulation is forming over the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast, which is expected to boost the strength of the monsoon.
